Rejection

The sun melts down to only moonlit darkness mirrored on a canvas of water.
Toes whisk waves under the old cedar planks that support us.
Side by side – we gaze. Longing.
Side by side – elbows brush – we talk. Engaged.
Side by side – your fingers softly interlock mine – my heart drops – we desire. Silent.
But, I am not yours and you are not mine. Hearts affirmed by others. Burying our bound souls, that, only of lovers.
The moonlight is bright and safe from storm. The water is pure and safe and warm. Raw and vulnerable – all reason drowns – down – to the depths – so deep – that no one will see – except you and me.
Suddenly awake and alive – allegiance, obedience, and devotion resurface and gasp for air – just to survive. I cannot live a lie.

As the moonlight darkens by the passing of a cloud. We must say goodbye. -jmw
